Subject Could Not Be Summarized

I’ve had people try to explain me with diagnoses, symptoms, notes, medications, charts, and whatever else happened to make it into the file.

Some of it was useful. Some of it was accurate. Some of it changed later.

None of it ever summed me up.

That’s where this hoodie came from.

The whole back is built around SUBJECT COULD NOT BE SUMMARIZED, because that’s probably the simplest way I know how to say it. You can know what somebody has been diagnosed with and still have absolutely no idea who they are.

You can know what medication they take and not know what keeps them awake at night. You can read a list of symptoms and still miss their sense of humor, their history, the shit they’ve survived, what pisses them off, what makes them laugh, or what their brain is doing when they’re sitting there looking completely fine.

People are complicated. I know I am.

The back has that full clinical-file look with the scan imagery, warnings, research details, toxic lime, aqua and all the little pieces that make it look like somebody tried very hard to document the situation.

They still didn’t get the whole story.

The front keeps it smaller with the matching chest graphic, and the white hoodie makes all of those colors hit a little harder than they do on black.

This one belongs in The Label Lab because that’s what the collection is really about for me. Labels can help. Diagnoses can matter. But there is still an actual person underneath all of it.

And that person is usually a hell of a lot more complicated than the paperwork.
